October Life Lately & November Playlist
October was birthday month, both mine and my dad’s, so of course presents and celebrations were in order, and most importantly cake! R made cake for the first time ever and it was a delicious pistachio and almond loaf cake, which was amazing! My lovely colleagues also surprised me with cake and cat related presents, so I’ve been feeling pretty darn lucky the last few weeks. Pumpkin was also pretty excited playing with all the wrapping paper and gift bags, so I think the birthday celebrations were a hit for her too.
1 Meal at The Corner House
To celebrate all these birthdays my parents visited and we headed out to The Corner House in Canterbury for Saturday lunch. We all chose the Romney lamb which was incredible, then R and I shared the chocolate peanut butter tart with banana ice cream and salted caramel. It was AMAZING. I still look back at pictures of it and drool. The ice cream was also a revelation as it tasted like proper fresh bananas, nothing artificial about it. Yum. If you ever find yourself in Canterbury I highly recommend heading there for food, especially as they do lunch deals which make it pretty reasonable price wise.
2 Old Friends
R and I spent a Saturday catching up with my old college friends and headed over to Sevenoaks to meet up with them. We had a wander around the town, had some lunch while watching Morris dancers and followed it all up by eating homemade scones with jam and cream. It was so nice to see them and hear all their news and plans for the future!
1 Breakfast Trip
Because I ended up working on my birthday we decided to head out for breakfast the day after at our favourite breakfast spot, the Refectory Kitchen. I had my usual order of waffles with blueberries and yoghurt and it was delicious as always! We then spent the rest of the day chilling out and finished it up by watching Ant Man and the Wasp which I thought was great- Paul Rudd is a dreamboat.
2 New Books
I picked up a couple of books from the Oxfam bookshop in Canterbury, possibly the best way to spend a morning. I’d gone in looking for a copy of Frankenstein and ended up coming out with The Secret History and Olive Kitteridge, both of which I’ve seen highly recommended by trustworthy sources. I finished The Secret History the other day and now really need to talk about it with everyone, so hit me up if you’ve read it!
4 Halloween Movies
I didn’t do too well with my seasonal movie watching in October as I only managed to fit 4 movies in. I did manage to do better with my seasonal reading instead though, so that’s a win. I managed to fit in Ghostbusters, Sleepy Hollow, Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic. I didn’t get around to watching Psycho, Gremlins or The Craft which had all been on my list. I’ll try to do better next year! At work there had been a halloween bake sale so I picked myself up a monster mint chocolate muffin which was pretty tasty.
After including The Futureheads version of Hounds of Love I had to include Kate Bush and then might have got a little carried away. But really, can there ever be too much Kate Bush? This month is also rather Led Zeppelin heavy (might have got carried away again!) and I had to include one of my favourite songs, Tangerine. If Kate Bush doesn’t make you want to start running across the moors and general wilderness, then maybe Patti Smith’s Because the Night will, because it definitely has that effect on me.
